Joanne offers her own brand of parenting, RESPECTFUL PARENTING, which she developed while working with adults, children and teens, individually, as couples, and families. She recognized that old style ways of parenting were shame based and did not encourage healthy emotional development. Joanne Baum advocates for, “an interactional, mutual learning model of respectfully dealing with your children at every age, considering their input, learning with your child, from your child, and teaching/guiding your child as they grow.” In Respectful Parenting healthy limits, consequences and boundaries are established rather than finding a “punishment to fit the crime.”
Parenting is the most joyful, rewarding, important, and challenging “work” you may ever do. Knowing: how you parent can seriously impact your child for years to come; affecting your child’s emotional, social, and cognitive development – can be daunting. Yet people take on the parenting role without formal training in child development every day. They find themselves going by the seat of their pants (so to speak) – repeating what was done to them except for trying to eliminate what they didn’t like as a child. Having the “Best Intentions” is not enough. Now we know so much more about: child development, brain development, and how to help children optimize their individual social, emotional, and cognitive development in childhood and later years, than we ever did before. When a child has special needs, the earlier those needs are identified and services provided, the better that child will do; early intervention is key.
The good news is – when you feel like you’re in over your head, there are people with parenting expertise and child development knowledge who can help.
Dr. Joanne Baum has written two books on parenting, the latest, GOT THE BABY WHERE’S THE MANUAL?!? won the 2007 IPPY Gold Medal in Parenting.
Joanne has a Service Mark on the concepts of Respectful Parenting. For more information on Respectful Parenting please check out Joanne’s other web-site: www.respectfulparenting.com.
Parent Coaching:
Joanne offers individualized sessions for parents wanting to focus on their own child(ren) and family. She can work with you using a Parenting Coach Model or a Family Therapy Model – which ever you think will be more effective for your family.
For New Parents or Soon to be Parents:
If you are pregnant or just starting your family it’s a great idea to meet with Joanne and your husband or partner so you can develop your own ideas (together) of how you want to parent before your baby arrives. Then, when you bring your baby home from the hospital, you’re both in agreement about the challenges and newness you will be living every day. The second chapter in Joanne’s book, Got the Baby Where’s the Manual?!? addresses the issues of transitioning from couple to family. Even though your baby’s birth is a much anticipated event, when your baby is born, it is not always easy for two adults to adjust to being parents and feel confident about their abilities to parent well when they are used to being independent and taking care of their own needs first…
For Parents Facing Challenges with Their Children:
Different stage and ages in your children’s lives present new challenges. What works at one time may not work another time. What works for one of your children may not work as well for another child. When in doubt, ask for help.
Dr. Baum studied life span development and has expertise in child development and learning styles. She has also worked with special needs children and understands complex family dynamics when one or more children have their own set of special needs. How do you juggle those needs with everyone else’s needs so nobody gets lost in the jumble of trying to take care of everyone?
